About the venue

Wordsworth House, Cockermouth, a townhouse of 1745, was acquired by public subscription as a permanent memorial to the poet in 1938. The property was his birthplace and childhood home, along with his sister Dorothy, until he was 13, when all the chattels from it were sold after his father’s death in 1784. The house has undergone a transformation in recent years, with the emphasis being put on the way in which the house was lived in by his father, John Wordsworth (1741–1783), and his mother, née Ann Cookson (1748–1778).
