Edward Stott was born William Edward Stott at Quarry Hill, Wardleworth, Rochdale, later becoming known by his middle name to differentiate between him and fellow artist William Stott of Oldham. Edward Stott’s father Samuel was a mill owner and twice Mayor of Rochdale. He expected his son to follow him into business and as such Edward was educated at Rochdale Grammar School and the King’s School, Ely.
