Born and trained in Frankfurt, Scholderer visited Paris in 1856–1857. In 1868 he returned and was included by his friend Fantin-Latour in a group portrait of Manet's disciples. The outbreak of the Franco-Prussian war in 1870 obliged him to move to London, where he regularly exhibited at the Royal Academy and was one of Sickert's first teachers. This painting of a dish of oysters, a cut lemon and a glass of Barsac reveals the influence of Manet's still lifes. It was purchased in 1891 by James Pyke Thompson.
