The chestnut tree is shown flowering between two large leaves, to suggest birth. The choice of the artist, of a traditional still-life and of the quotation from Swinburne illustrate the development of the distinguished art-critic, Peter Fuller, who was killed when his chauffeur-driven car crashed into a field besides the M4. He was being driven from his house in Bath to his country cottage in Stowlangtoft, where he is buried together with his still-born son Gabriel.
