Born in New York and brought up in Budapest, E. M. Jellinek returned to the USA in mid-life. He a was a biostatistician, physiologist, and researcher in the field of alcohol addiction. He wrote the influential book, 'The Disease Concept of Alcoholism' (1960).

The Jellinek Memorial Award, established in 1968, is awarded annually for research into alcohol related disorders. It comprises a cash prize plus a bust of Jellinek, known as the 'Bunky', Jellinek's nickname. This head was part of the award in 1979 to Dr David Davies (1911–1983), a psychiatrist at the Maudsley Hospital, for his contribution to the field.
