Dan Davies was born in 1859 at Berry Square, Dowlais. He was one of the greatest choir conductors Wales ever had, winning £3,000 in prize money as well as many cups and medals between 1882 and 1898.

This portrait is one of a pair with 'Mrs Dan Davies', also painted by Harris and owned by the Collection. It hung in the Davies's family home in the Walk, and was featured in the BBC programme 'Coming Home: Rolf Harris'.

The Harris family owned a portrait studio in Merthyr Tydfil during the late nineteenth century. George later moved to Cardiff and opened a studio in Queen Street. After World War One he and his family emigrated to Australia. The Museum is fortunate enough to have a number of George Frederick Harris paintings as well as a painting by his grandson, Rolf Harris.
