Best known for his large multiple figure compositions, William Roberts (1895–1980) also painted many portraits, most notably of his wife Sarah Kramer and other family members. In 1984 the National Portrait Gallery held an exhibition of his family portraits 'William Roberts 1895–1980. An Artist and His Family'. Other portraits include a double portrait of the economist John Maynard Keynes, Baron Keynes and his wife Lydia Lopokova, and archaeologist and writer T.E. Lawrence, whilst in the early 1960s he portrayed many of the former Vorticist group in his painting 'The Vorticists at the Restaurant de la Tour Eiffel: Spring, 1915'.
