James Purdy (1900–1972), born in Oldham, was a painter and teacher who documented the changing face of Oldham and the beauty of the countryside surrounding the town. Gallery Oldham honoured him with an exhibition of his work in 1971. Developed in association with Grant Waters, Art Detective Group Leader: South East England, East England and the Midlands.
