The art of portrait painting in the Western tradition began with icon painting. Paintings of Christ and the saints which stretch back over 1,500 years. Slowly this evolved to incorporate images of the wealthy patrons and leaders of the church too. The the Popes and Bishops of the Church and the members of the aristocracy who funded them.
By the 18th century portrait painting was still largely focused on the men and women of the upper classes. But the advent of photography began to shift the focus of portraiture away from the wealthy and predominantly masculine. The art of painting slowly followed suit. With painting as an occupation becoming open to all. And the people who artists now choose to paint becoming varied and diverse too.
