With a minimal sky and landscape, this painting is all about the grouping, movement, light and colour of the jockeys and horses. Through this, we can feel the tension at the start of the race and hear the shouts of the jockeys as they jostle for their place. Painted towards the end of Munnings's life, and for his own enjoyment, the loose depictions of the horses hark back to his earlier years. Free from constraints Munnings is concerned purely with capturing the atmosphere of the movement at the start of a race, evoking its tensions and vitality, its immediacy as the jockeys jostle for their positions. Munnings recalls: 'A hundred times have I seen this sight, and yet it was more beautiful than ever... once more I saw the classic sight of bright silks against a dark sky.
