William Roberts worked in both Cubist and Vorticist styles during his formative years. By the mid-1920s he had evolved his own distinctive style of tubular figures arranged rhythmically within a frieze-like pattern. He preferred everyday scenes, crowded with figures whose faces show exaggerated expressions, often verging on caricature. Here, the viewer's eye is led around the composition by the gesturing hands and glances of the elderly people.
