In this painting, the focal point is the colouring of the 'white' pony, Augereau. Close up we can see that he is a blend of reds, pinks, yellows and blues, which reflect the colouring of his surroundings. Munnings was an expert in using a variety of colours for shading and form. In the first half of his career, Munnings used impasto, thick paint, to create these effects.
