This shows one of a variety of buildings in Somerset thought to be under threat of demolition in the 1960s. Paintings of them were commissioned by Arthur Batten-Pool of Rode Manor, which he bequeathed to the Victoria Art Gallery. Batten-Pool was deeply concerned about the demolition of historic buildings in the post-Second World War period. He wanted a record to remain, even if the buildings themselves were lost. Arthur Batten-Pool served in the First World War, and was awarded the Victoria Cross, the army’s most prestigious award for gallantry. His home village, Rode, achieved notoriety in the 19th century when the murder of a small boy prompted a major police investigation. This crime has recently been brought back to public attention with Kate Summerscale’s book, 'The Suspicions of Mr Whicher'.
