A sculpture of the sun on a metal tripod. The face of the sculpture shows a convex form of the sun and at night sensors illuminate an animated image of a solar flare on its face. An additional set of way markers are placed at various distances away from the sculpture along the C2C route (Coast to Coast Cycle Route). The distances relate to the relative distance from the sun of the planets. Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn are all located within a short distance from the Sun and between the Sun and the National Glass Centre. The sculpture was created to commemorate the local areas connection with the Venerable Bede, who’s, monastery was located above this site. He was the first to use the position of the planets to calculate the date for Easter.
