Six lively figures wearing an array of headgear including hats and helmets dominate this stained glass panel. Amongst them is a soldier and several merchants. The group may be observing the trial of a Pilgrim. The panel displays the extraordinary technical virtuosity of sixteenth-century glass-painters. The style of painting suggests that the panel may have come from Normandy, where traditions of glass-painting had been reinvigorated by the Netherlandish artist Arnold of Nijmegen (1490–c.1536). Many churches lost their windows during the French Revolution and English collectors eagerly acquired them in the early years of the nineteenth century.
