Joshua Cristall’s artistic career was full of struggle. His father opposed his wish to become a painter. Following a period working as a china painter in the potteries, he went to London and tried hard to break into the art world. For some time he lived in great poverty, eating nothing but potatoes. He eventually gained a place at the Royal Academy schools. From then on he made a living from art, but his health was never good.

A recurring strand in Cristall’s work is his way of combining the British landscape with classical motifs.
