The work has a square-plan, and each elevation has a base course, panelled pilasters, architrave (lintel or beam), frieze and mutuled (projecting flat block) cornice with a coped parapet above with obelisk finials to each corner; a crocket-capitalled shaft to the centre above, supporting a carved lion clasping a shield. The north west elevation has a round-arched niche with a lion-headed tap and granite bowl to the centre. There is a square plaque above with a red sandstone carved heraldic shield. Carved on the frieze is 'AD 1837–1897' and a portrait of Queen Victoria in shield with acanthus foliate carving to the parapet above. On the north east elevation is a bowed base course to the centre with a bowed granite horse trough. There is a bronze plaque above commemorating members of Selkirk Detachment Border Rifles who fought in Boer War (1900–1903), and the town emblem with foliate carving to the parapet.
