Victor Neep’s early paintings are described as growing ‘out of peat and slate, dry stone walls and old quarry machines, rusting in silhouette against a white moon,’ and as slightly menacing and desolate in tone. Fifty years later this work has taken on a flavour of its time, derived from continental influences, yet part of a strong British tradition. After wartime national service, Neep studied art in Liverpool, Blackpool and at Chelsea Polytechnic. He worked as a freelance illustrator and industrial designer while teaching part-time at Bath Academy and in Hertford and Rye. He taught briefly at Bethesda Grammar School then lectured at Rochdale and Flint Colleges of Art. Living in North Wales, he exhibited in Wales and the north of England, as well as with the London Group.
