plaque 1 (2 in Welsh): This statue of Mr Max Boyce was unveiled by The First Minister of Wales Mr Mark Drakeford on 30th September 2023 in the presence of His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant Mrs Louise Fleet CStJ, JP and The Band of the Royal Welsh. / The statue was sculpted by local artist Mr Rubin Eynon. / Max Boyce MBE a Freeman of the Borough of Meath and Port Talbot was born in Glynneath on 27th September 1943. A singer / songwriter, entertainer and poet. A modern day folk hero whose legendary songs and stories earned him a place in the Pantheon of Welsh Culture.; plaque 3: DUW IT’S HARD / In our little valley they closed the colliery down, / And the pithead baths is a supermarket now. / Empty journeys red with rust rolled to rest amongst the dust / And the Pithead baths is a supermarket now.; plaque 4: RHONDDA GREY / His father took him by the hand and they walked down Albion Street / Down by the old Rock incline where the council put a seat / Where old men say at the close of day ‘dy’n ni wedi g’neud ein siar’ / And the colour in their faces says ‘The tools are on the bar.’; plaque 5: WHEN JUST THE TIDE WENT OUT / And though those days are over the memories remain / when children painted rainbows and the sun shone through the rain / And I pray we’ll find an answer, for my faith is cast in doubt / And God draws back the heavens and all the stars come out. Plaque 6: HYMNS AND ARIAS / And we were singing Hymns and Arias, / ‘Land of my Fathers’, / ’Ar Hyd y nos’.
