The sitter is wearing a high-waisted white dress with a shawl draped over her right shoulder. This costume suggests the picture may have been painted around 1806, by which time she would have been 35. Raeburn has flattered her a little, but the freshness of her skin and the light in her clear grey eyes are surely her own and those of a mature and beautiful woman.
