John A. Milne, a Vice President of the Society, was awarded the Society’s Albert Medal in 1940 for services to Industrial Art. In 1932, when Chairman of the Council, he conceived and originated the Exhibition of British Art in Industry, held in 1935 in collaboration with the Royal Academy. This was the first exhibition of its kind for which no charge for space was required, the finance being guaranteed by the Society’s Fellows, allowing independent selection of exhibits on their artistic merits. In 1936 Milne suggested the establishment of a high award in Industrial Art, equivalent to that of the Royal Academy’s RA in the Fine Arts, resulting in the distinction of ‘Designer for Industry of the Royal Society of Arts’ known by the letters RDI (Royal Designers for Industry).
