A statue of Lord Palmerston on a square inscribed pedestal and plinth. Henry John Temple (1784–1865), 3rd Viscount Palmerston is probably the most famous statesman to be connected with the town. He was born in Westminster, but for much of his life lived at the family's country estate at Broadlands, near Romsey. He was MP for South Hampshire and a burgess of Southampton. He opened the newly built Hartley Institution on the High Street in 1862. He is best remembered as a reforming prime minister and a jingoistic foreign secretary.
