Born in Farnham, Surrey, Kenneth Hall was educated at Lancing College. On leaving school he studied agriculture briefly before working with a firm of interior decorators in London. Hall, along with Basil Rakoczi, founded The White Stag Group in 1935, their aim being to promote the advancement of subjectivity in psychological analysis and art. They represented, and encouraged, a move from Academicism to Modernism, and their 'Subjective Art' strongly influenced the work being made at the time by Irish artists such as Louis le Brocquy, May Guinness and Patrick Scott.

This particular painting was given as a gift from the artist to Rakoczi, and then passed down to Rakoczi's grandson. In 2005 it was also featured in a major exhibition of The White Stag Group held at the Irish Museum of Modern Art.
