He was the eldest son of Granville Leveson-Gower, 1st Marquis of Stafford. His vast estates and interests in industy meant he was probably the wealthiest man in 19th-century Britain. He is also known for his controversial role in the Highland Clearances, which took place between 1811 and 1820.
