Restored in 1892, the monumental cross is triangular in plan and rests on a seven-step base. It has a tall, subtly moulded basement divided by a string, with diapering (a repeated pattern of squares) throughout and shields, carved with the arms of England, Leon and Castile, and Ponthieu, to the upper part. The middle section is made up of canopied niches, containing three figures of Queen Eleanor – one as a young woman, one as a married woman and one as Queen. The cross is missing, presumed destroyed in the 1640s. The cross is one of 12 crosses erected by Edward I in memory of his wife, Eleanor of Castile, after her death in 1290. The crosses are located at the resting places of her funeral cortege during its journey from Lincoln to Westminster Abbey.
