A lawyer, antiquarian and collector, John Disney lived at The Hyde, near Ingatestone. This bust was made when he visited Rome in 1827. Its sculptor, Raimondo Trentanove, was a pupil of Antonio Canova (1757–1822), who portrayed many eminent people such as George Washington and the Princess of Wales.

Disney was president of the Chelmsford Philosophical Society, which founded Chelmsford Museum in 1835. He endowed the Disney Professorship of Archaeology at the University of Cambridge and there is a marble version of this bust at the Fitzwilliam Museum.
