Corot began to paint outside, en plein air, by 1822 and visited Italy three times between 1825 and 1843. His earlier works are startlingly objective, but in middle age he developed a more poetical classical landscape style. Following a purchase by Napoleon III from the 1855 Salon, Corot's late style became increasingly popular. This view of around 1870 depicts Corbeil, a town on the Seine, halfway between Paris and the village of Barbizon, where Corot often painted. It was purchased by Margaret Davies in 1910.
