John Bryant Lane was born in Helston, Cornwall, son of Samuel Lane, a chemist and exciseman and Margaret (née Baldwin). He was educated in Truro and at the age of 14 his taste in art attracted the patronage of Lord de Dunstanville who sent him to Rome in 1817, where he remained for 10 years. His 'Vision of Joseph' caused offence and he and his picture were expelled from the papal dominions. He died in London in 1868.
