Pierre Mignard was born in Champagne in 1610 and is well known as a historical and portrait painter. At an early age he developed a passion for painting and later entered the studio of Simon Vouet, one of the most prominent artists in France. Cardinal Richelieu was born in Paris in 1585 to an aristocratic father who had been a captain in the Royal Guard. He was appointed Bishop of Lucan in 1606, Secretary of State in 1616 and then Cardinal in 1622.
