Inscription description

full text of embedded trail: Anne Knight of Chelmsford 1786–1862 was one of eight children a singular looking woman very pleasant and polite. A village in Jamaica for freed slaves was called Knightsville in her honour. In 1833 Anne knight and other ladies of England had between them obtained 187,000 names on a petition in only 10 days by canvassing door to door on behalf of the Anti-Slavery Movement. Anne Knight – Never will the nations of the earth be well governed until both sexes as well as all parties are fully represented and have influence, a voice and a hand in the enactment and administration of the law. In 1852, in the Council Chamber, in Chelmsford, she made a passionate plea for the votes for all women over the age of 21. "By tortured millions, by the divine redeemer, enfranchise humanity, bid the outraged world, be free". Anne Knight 1855.
