Treuliodd Charles Tunnicliffe oriau yn astudio bywyd gwyllt yn y maes, gan lenwi ei lyfrau braslunio â lluniadau arsylwadol cyflym, gan nodi arferion a nodweddion symudiad; manylion a ddefnyddiodd yn ddiweddarach fel gwybodaeth gyfeiriol.
