Three-quarter-length portrait of Davidson, seated at his desk and leaning on one elbow. The kindly figure of Davidson turns round to look at the spectator, as if interrupted while writing. A nearby table is covered with leather-bound books.

On Thursday 27th May 1897, a presentation was held in the Common Hall of the Free Assembly buildings in Edinburgh. The portrait, which was paid for by subscription, was presented to the Senatus of New College in honour of the sitter, who was Professor of Hebrew and Old Testament studies at New College, Edinburgh. The presentation is recorded in the 'Aberdeen Weekly Journal' of 2nd June 1897.
