The University of Edinburgh Art Collection has as its centrepiece, the Torrie Collection of seventeenth-century Dutch and Italian Masters with works by Ruisdael, ten Oever, Van der Meulen, Pynacker, Rosa and van de Velde. The University also holds the second largest collection of portraits in Scotland ranging from seventeenth-century portraits of John Napier and John Knox to the recent dynamic painting of Peter Higgs by Ken Currie. Other portrait artists represented are Sir Henry Raeburn, Stanley Cursiter, Sir George Reid, James Cowie and Victoria Crowe. The Collection has examples of works by modern Scottish artists such as Elizabeth Blackadder, Joan Eardley, William Gillies, William MacTaggart, Samuel Peploe, James Guthrie, George Leslie Hunter, John McLean, and William Johnstone. The Art Collection has grown steadily throughout the history of the University of Edinburgh and continues to benefit from and increase through the purchase, donation and bequest of many fine works.
