Painter, teacher, writer and broadcaster in Wales on art, born and lived in Llanystumdwy, Carnarvonshire, sometimes known as Elis Gwyn. He realised only slowly that he should be an artist, influenced by seeing the work of modern English painters and that of Brenda Chamberlain and John Petts, who became a friend and who first urged him to show at Royal National Eisteddfod in 1951. Attended University College of North Wales, Bangor, 1936–40. From 1948 was art master at Pwllheli Grammar School for 31 years, also teaching evening classes for a decade for the University. Was a regular BBC Television and radio broadcaster and wrote on art, including a bilingual book on Richard Wilson, published in 1973. Also showed at SEA and NWG and at Tegfryn Gallery, Menai Bridge.
