Elizabeth College was founded in 1563 by a Royal Charter from Queen Elizabeth I. A selective day school, the College caters for boys aged 3 to 18 and girls from 3 to 11. In 1824 Guernsey’s Lieutenant-Governor, Sir John Colbourne, ordered a public inquiry into education at the College which culminated in a re-chartering and the construction of the current College buildings. Portraits of every College Principal since the re-chartering are displayed in the Le Marchant Room, within the tower at the top of the school.
