William Crotch (1775–1847) is shown here when aged three. An exceptional child prodigy, he played to the King and Queen at Buckingham Palace in 1779. This is the first of three portraits painted by John Sanders – two are now lost although this and one other remain as prints. Crotch later wrote: 'The first letter from home is dated January 2nd 1779, and mentions Mr Sa(u)nders, a portrait painter of Norwich, who had made three portraits in oils of me, but I believe not likenesses, as the prints from them are very unlike each other...'. Sanders was one of many artists influenced by Sir Joshua Reynolds’ portraits of children, painted in their white dresses up against the picture plane, often filling the canvas and with their appealing, slightly tilted heads and rosy cheeks.
