Carpenter was the second Registrar of the University of London, 1856–1879. He contributed notably to the expansion of science degrees. Previously he studied at University College London and was a professor at University College and at Bedford College. Some of his writings are available at Senate House Library. The work is in a gilt gesso frame. Exhibited at Royal Jubilee Exhibition, Manchester, 1887.
