Farms often feature in Sturrock's oeuvre as do Dorset and Somerset scenes. An early letter from Sturrock to the RSA in 1914, when he was on the Carnegie Scholarship, hints at his future interest in English landscape: 'I had a long day's walking in Surrey and discovered that England has counties as paintable as Scotland!'
