An accomplished amateur violinist and Master of the Worshipful Company of Musicians, it was said that businessman Walter Willson Cobbett (1847–1937), 'devoted to commerce what little time he could spare from music'. Cobbett's interest, both as a performer and patron, was in the field of chamber music. He instigated several prizes and funds for the study and composition of chamber works at the Royal College of Music that have since been considered significant in the English musical renaissance of the early twentieth century. In particular, the prize he established for the composition of a 'Phantasy', reflecting his interest in Elizabethan Viol Phantasies, led to the composition of prize-winning works by Hurlstone, Bridge, Howells and Ireland.
