While on the North American Station Curtis was noticed by Admiral Shuldham, who took him into his flagship. In the following year, 1776, he promoted him into the ‘Senegal’. He became a flag captain to Lord Howe in 1777 and in 1782 was at Gibraltar when Howe relieved it. He returned to England in the ‘Victory’, Howe’s flagship, and was knighted. Curtis was again with Howe as flag captain in 1790 and, after a short break, captain of the fleet for as long as Howe flew his flag, which included the Battle of the First of June.
