A group of larger than life-size male and female figures in a tympanum. The central figure represents Bolton, her left hand resting on a shield, on which is the borough’s coat of arms. To her right is a seated female figure representing Manufacture, holding a distaff for spinning, and a young African boy carrying a basket of cotton. A reclining female figure, representing Earth, pouring her gifts from a cornucopia, is in the angle of the pediment. Commerce is the theme of the group to the left of 'Bolton'. A female figure represents Commerce, and is shown holding a caduceus and a helm. A young boy is shown holding a boat by the bow. In the angle is the reclining figure of Ocean, watching a dolphin, a reminder of the importance of international trade to the town.
