William Gray attended evening classes at the Glasgow School of Art from 1909 and in 1914 he was awarded a medal for excellence in drawing and painting. However, like many of his contemporaries, Gray’s studies were interrupted as a result of being called up to serve in the First World War. This painting of a townscape study was completed long after the war had ended and reflects a more tranquil time.
