In Roman times Staines was known as was Ad Pontes, meaning 'settlement by the bridge'. Over 2,000 years the name of the town may have changed and the bridges built by earlier settlers may have been replaced, but the town has existed and thrived. Those 2,000 years are celebrated in this statue by David Backhouse. A man from Ad Pontes dances with a woman from Staines-upon-Thames. Their bodies are connected across many centuries and together they form the shape of a sundial, their shadows casting north at midday.
