For almost 20 years, the sitter was Recorder for Bath. This meant that he was the city’s senior judge. This was a very prestigious post, and was the culmination of a long and distinguished legal career.

The painting was given to the city of Bath by the sitter's widow and has hung in the Guildhall Magistrates Room, commemorating Saunders’ public service.
