Thomas Turner was Treasurer of Guy's Hospital from 1856–1876. He would have been 37 years old in this painting. It is inscribed on the envelope on the desk: ‘Thomas Turner Esq, Fenton House / Hamsptead’ Fenton House is a seventeenth century merchant house in Hamstead, that is now owned by the National Trust. One of Turner’s sons, Francis Charlewood Turner, was born there in 1843. Turner was born in Hull, Yorkshire, He took his degree in Maths at Cambridge in 1823–1827 and afterwards became a Fellow of Trinity College. He married Mary Anne Charlewood in 1839, daughter of his friend the Rev. Charles Benjamin Charlewood of Oak Hill, near Cheadle, Staffordshire. He was called to the Bar in 1831 and practised for some years in Chancery Courts until 1846, when he retired to devote himself to philanthropic work.
