Titled ‘Thomas’ but often referred to as the ‘Castleside Lead Miner’ the sculpture is in recognition of the Healeyfield Lead Mine and the broader areas industrial past in lead and silver mining. Appropriate to the history of Healeyfield Lead Mine, an original 1860s lead mining tub was located by Graham Robson, an accomplished coal tub maker. The lead tub was restored to accompany the wood carved Lead Miner sculpted by Tommy Craggs, a local chainsaw carver. Naming the sculpture 'Thomas' is explained by the Parish Council member whose ideas were realised in the artwork as relating to Castleside House, now known as The Smelters Arms, where the Muse family lived from the late 1800s. Mr Thomas Muse was a County Councillor for Castleside, a grocer, draper and also owned a gannister quarry.
