Fichel was a portrait and genre painter. He entered the École des Beaux-Arts in 1841 and formed a close working relationship with Delaroche and Drolling. His colourful portrait and costume compositions were shown at the Salon between 1849 and 1895. This attractive composition shows inspiration from earlier Dutch interiors, focusing not only on the figure, but also on the décor surrounding him, with the beautifully rendered wallpaper and furniture. This is an intimate scene capturing a model in a pose that suggests that he is unaware of the artist's presence.
