Clough attended the Chelsea School of Art in London from 1938 to 1939 before the war, becoming an engineer's draughtsman and mapper from 1940 to 1945. By the 1960s she had moved away from more figurative depictions of urban life and work, towards an abstract style that still took inspiration from her physical surroundings and revealed her continuing fascination with the 'edginess' of form, where signs, symbols and figurative elements may still be discernable within abstract compositions. Clough was the winner of the 1999 Jerwood Prize for painting.
