To the East of Tutankhamun's Burial chamber was a storeroom, which Howard Carter named the 'Treasury'. Against the far wall stood a substantial gilded shrine mounted on a sledge, holding the embalmed internal organs of the King, which Arthur Mace described as 'the most impressive monument I've ever seen'. Placed at the Treasury's doorway, as if guarding the entrance, was a portable wooden shrine surmounted by a majestic figure of the jackal-god Anubis, still wrapped in linen covers, topped by a floral garland fastened around the jackal's neck. Work in this room started on 24 October 1926 with Harry Burton's photographic records. This image is the first of two illustrating Burton's artful use of light: in this view, hidden lighting produces a dramatic and mysterious effect, spotlighting the spectacular shrine, while in another picture (Burton p1169a), the light source is in the Burial chamber with a shaft of light highlighting the Anubis shrine.
