Figures are kneeling in worship to the left, including a woman with a basket of eggs, a young child, a shepherd with a crook, and three other figures in shadow. To the right, an old man with a sheep tied by the legs, an old woman, a young child kneel trying to catch sight of Jesus. Another old man is carrying a lantern behind Mary's shoulder. There is a village landscape in the background including cottages and an arched bridge. The colours are naturalistic and highly illuminated by the Virgin Mary and Jesus's gold halos.
